RESUMO

Edible oil is essential for people's daily life but also results in a large amount of oily wastewater simultaneously. Oil-water separation is a practical route that can not only purify wastewater but also recycle valuable edible oil. In this study, the superhydrophobic copper mesh (SCM) was prepared by chemical etching, and a novel oil-water centrifugal device was designed for high-efficiency separation of edible oil wastewater. The kernel is a self-prepared SCM, which has a water contact angle (WCA) of 155.1 ± 1.8° and an oil contact angle (OCA) of 0°. Besides, the separation performance of the SCM for edible oil-water mixtures was studied in this study. The results showed that the SCM exhibited excellent oil/water separation performance, with a separation efficiency of up to 96.7% for sunflower seed oil-water wastewater, 93.3% for corn oil-water wastewater, and 98.3% for peanut oil-water wastewater, respectively. Moreover, the separation efficiency was still over 90% after 18 cycles. A model was established to analyze the oil-water separation mechanism via centrifugation. The oil-water centrifugal separation device has great potential for scale-up applications.

RESUMO

Faced with the contradiction between the increasing traffic volume and the aging road infrastructures in the rural area, this paper aims to propose feasible strategies to enhance the level of service and safety, by a case study of the rural area in the north Jintan district. In order to figure out current issues related to rural roads, a carefully designed investigation has been conducted, and the results of the two-week investigation include roads' basic information, traffic signs and protective facilities, surrounding landscape, and etc. Based on the field driving tests, specific problems including signs category, signs installation and facility maintenance have been fully analyzed. Meanwhile, the problem of roadnet connectivity has also been pointed out through the theory of complex network, and results show that the average node clustering coefficient and shortest path length perform worse than the demonstration plot of other rural districts. For the sake of rural traffic safety and management efficiency, both quantified and qualified strategies have been put forward. The quantified strategies include the regular inspection indicators, the safety sight distance at T-type crossings, as well as the risk severity of sections and the crossings. The qualified strategies involve the management of trucks and roadworks, the setting of signalized intersections, and the timely updates of traffic signs and facilities. Finally, an intelligent management system framework has been established for rural road traffic, with highly interconnected modules of data acquisition, risk identification and information publishing.

RESUMO

Pressure ulcers (PUs) have emerged as a substantial burden on individuals and society. The introduction of innovative dressings that facilitate the healing of pressure ulcer wounds represents a cost-effective alternative for treatment. In this study, the emphasis is on the preparation of Carthamus tinctorius L. polysaccharide (CTLP) as hydrogel microspheres (MPs), which are then encapsulated within a hydrogel matrix crosslinked with phenylboronic acid gelatin (Gelatin-PBA) andϵ-polylysine-grafted catechol (ϵ-PL-Cat) to enable sustained release for promoting pressure ulcer healing. The presented Gelatin-PBA/ϵ-PL-Cat (GPL)/CTLP-MPs hydrogel demonstrated outstanding self-healing properties. In addition,in vitroexperiments revealed that the hydrogel exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity, excellent biocompatibility. And it showed the capacity to promote vascular formation, effectively scavenge reactive oxygen species, and facilitate macrophage polarization from the M1 to M2 phenotype. In vivowound healing of mice PUs indicated that the prepared GPL/CTLP-MPs hydrogel effectively accelerated the formation of granulation tissue and facilitated the healing of the wounds. In summary,in vivoandin vitroexperiments consistently highlight the therapeutic potential of GPL/CTLP-MPs hydrogel in facilitating the healing process of PUs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD), often coexisting with various systemic disorders, may increase the risk of falls. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk of falls among patients with CKD in China. METHODS: We included patients with/without CKD from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Our primary outcome was the occurrence of fall accidents within the past 2 years. To enhance the robustness of our findings, we employed a multivariable logistic regression model, conducted propensity score analysis, and applied an inverse probability-weighting model. RESULTS: A total of 12,658 participants were included, the prevalence of fall accident rates were 17.1% (2,028/11,837) among participants without CKD and 24.7% (203/821) among those with CKD. In the inverse probability-weighting model, participants with CKD exhibited higher fall accident rates (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.08-1.53, p = 0.005 ). Sensitivity and subgroup analysis showed the results still stable. CONCLUSIONS: The population in China afflicted with CKD has a significantly heightened risk of experiencing falls, underscoring the crucial importance of intensifying efforts in assessing and preventing fall risks.

RESUMO

Mineral processing wastewater contains a lot of organic matter and heavy metal ions, and poor self-degradation ability makes it a key treatment object in environmental treatment. Photocatalysis is a promising technology to efficiently mineralize refractory contaminants from wastewater. In this work, 3D flower-like S-scheme N-Bi2O2CO3/g-C3N4 heterostructures were successfully constructed by hydrothermal method with the auxiliary of ionic liquids. The photocatalytic experiments show that the catalytic activity of heterojunction photocatalysts was significantly higher than that of bare g-C3N4 and N-Bi2O2CO3 for the degradation of two pollutants. NBOC/CN-2 shows the highest photocatalytic performance, and the degradation efficiency of sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) on NBOC/CN-2 is 1.85 and 3 times that of bare g-C3N4 and Bi2O2CO3, respectively. The degradation efficiency of m-Cresol on NBOC/CN-2 is 8.34 and 6.93 times that of bare g-C3N4 and N-Bi2O2CO3, respectively. This significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the formation of flower-like heterojunctions, which can greatly increase the specific surface area and facilitate the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Total organic carbon (TOC) experiment proves that the two pollutants are effectively mineralized under the action of the prepared photocatalyst. The degradation path of m-Cresol degradation products was inferred based on the ion fragments. The capture experiment and Nitro-blue tetrazolium (NBT)-•O2- measurement show that superoxide radical plays a major role in photocatalytic degradation. The outstanding stability of the prepared flower-like heterojunction samples was examined by cyclic experiments. The S-scheme charge transfer mechanism has been proposed to explain the boosted activity of the flower-like heterojunction photocatalyst. This work provides a new idea for the design of efficient and stable g-C3N4-based photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of refractory wastewater.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: At present, there is no objective prognostic index available for patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who underwent intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). This study is to develop a nomogram based on hematologic inflammatory indices for ESCC patients treated with IMRT. METHODS: 581 patients with ESCC receiving definitive IMRT were enrolled in our retrospective study. Of which, 434 patients with treatment-naïve ESCC in Fujian Cancer Hospital were defined as the training cohort. Additional 147 newly diagnosed ESCC patients were used as the validation cohort. Independent predictors of overall survival (OS) were employed to establish a nomogram model. The predictive ability was evaluated by time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves, the concordance index (C-index), net reclassification index (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Decision curve analysis (DCA) was performed to assess the clinical benefits of the nomogram model. The entire series was divided into 3 risk subgroups stratified by the total nomogram scores. RESULTS: Clinical TNM staging, primary gross tumor volume, chemotherapy, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet lymphocyte ratio were independent predictors of OS. Nomogram was developed incorporating these factors. Compared with the 8th American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging, the C-index for 5-year OS (.627 and .629) and the AUC value of 5-year OS (.706 and .719) in the training and validation cohorts (respectively) were superior. Furthermore, the nomogram model presented higher NRI and IDI. DCA also demonstrated that the nomogram model provided greater clinical benefit. Finally, patients with <84.8, 84.8-151.4, and >151.4 points were categorized into low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk groups. Their 5-year OS rates were 44.0%, 23.6%, and 8.9%, respectively. The C-index was .625, which was higher than the 8th AJCC staging. CONCLUSIONS: We have developed a nomogram model that enables risk-stratification of patients with ESCC receiving definitive IMRT. Our findings may serve as a reference for personalized treatment.

RESUMO

Background: This retrospective review of patients with upper thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) analyzed the prognostic value of age, as a continuous variable, and offered insight into treatment options. Methods: 568 upper ESCC patients underwent radical therapy between 2004 and 2016. Age as a continuous variable was entered into the Cox regression model with penalized spline (P-spline) analysis to investigate a correlation between age and survival outcomes. Results: Before adjustment, P-spline regression revealed U-shaped survival curves. Sixty years was the optimal cut-off age for differences in overall and progression-free survival (OS, PFS). The cohort was divided into age groups ≤ 50, 51-69, and ≥ 70 years. Multivariate analyses showed no significant differences in either PFS or OS for patients aged ≤ 50 and 51-69 years. After adjusting for covariates, P-spline regression showed that the risk of mortality and disease progression increased with age, and ≥ 70 years was an unfavorable independent prognostic factor. For age ≥ 70 years, the OS and PFS associated with non-surgery was comparable to that of surgery. For patients younger, the OS and PFS of patients given surgery was significantly better than that of patients given non-surgery. Conclusion: Age was an independent prognostic factor for upper ESCC. Patients ≥ 70 years achieved no significant survival benefit from surgery, but for those younger than 70 years surgery was the preferred treatment option.

RESUMO

Background: The study aimed to develop a nomogram model to predict overall survival (OS) and construct a risk stratification system of upper thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods: Newly diagnosed 568 patients with upper ESCC at Fujian Medical University Cancer Hospital were taken as a training cohort, and additional 155 patients with upper ESCC from Sichuan Cancer Hospital Institute were used as a validation cohort. A nomogram was established using Cox proportional hazard regression to identify prognostic factors for OS. The predictive power of nomogram model was evaluated by using 4 indices: concordance statistics (C-index), time-dependent ROC (ROCt) curve, net reclassification index (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Results: In this study, multivariate analysis revealed that gender, clinical T stage, clinical N stage and primary gross tumor volume were independent prognostic factors for OS in the training cohort. The nomogram based on these factors presented favorable prognostic efficacy in the both training and validation cohorts, with concordance statistics (C-index) of 0.622, 0.713, and area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.709, 0.739, respectively, which appeared superior to those of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. Additionally, net reclassification index (NRI) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) of the nomogram presented better discrimination ability to predict survival than those of AJCC staging. Furthermore, decision curve analysis (DCA) of the nomogram exhibited greater clinical performance than that of AJCC staging. Finally, the nomogram fairly distinguished the OS rates among low, moderate, and high risk groups, whereas the OS curves of clinical stage could not be well separated among clinical AJCC stage. Conclusion: We built an effective nomogram model for predicting OS of upper ESCC, which may improve clinicians' abilities to predict individualized survival and facilitate to further stratify the management of patients at risk.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND The recurrence of COVID-19 and the continuous escalation of prevention and control policies can lead to an increase in mental health problems. This study aimed to investigate the perceived stress, coping style, resilience, and social support among patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) during the COVID-19 epidemic lockdown in China. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional observational study enrolled 197 patients on MHD from the Guangdong Province Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital and the Hedong Hospital of Guangzhou Liwan District People's Hospital during July 2021. AMOS 24.0 and PROCESS Macro 3.1 model 6 were used for analyses of moderating mediating effects. RESULTS Perceived stress was negatively correlated with positive coping style (r=-0.305, P<0.001) and resilience (r=-0.258, P<0.001), whereas resilience (r=0.631, P<0.001) and social support (r=0.300, P<0.001) were positively correlated with positive coping style among patients on MHD. In the moderated mediating model, perceived stress had significant direct predictive effects on positive coping style (95% CI -0.33, -0.07), and perceived stress had significant indirect predictive effects on positive coping styles through resilience (95% CI -0.26, -0.06) or social support (95% CI 0.01, 0.06). Perceived stress had significant indirect predictive effects on positive coping style through both resilience and social support (95% CI -0.04, -0.01). CONCLUSIONS Perceived stress not only predicted coping style directly, but also indirectly predicted coping style through resilience and social support. Coping style was affected by internal and external factors during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To aid clinicians strategizing treatment for upper esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), this retrospective study investigated associations between primary gross tumor volume (GTVp) and prognosis in patients given surgical resection, radiotherapy, or both resection and radiotherapy. METHODS: The population comprised 568 patients with upper ESCC given definitive treatment, including 238, 216, and 114 who underwent surgery, radiotherapy, or combined radiotherapy and surgery. GTVp as a continuous variable was entered into the multivariate Cox model using penalized splines (P-splines) to determine the optimal cutoff value. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to adjust imbalanced characteristics among the treatment groups. RESULTS: P-spline regression revealed a dependence of patient outcomes on GTVp, with 30 cm3 being an optimal cut-off for differences in overall and progression-free survival (OS, PFS). GTVp ≥30 cm3 was a negative independent prognostic factor for OS and PFS. PSM analyses confirmed the prognostic value of GTVp. For GTVp < 30 cm3, no significant survival differences were observed among the 3 treatments. For GTVp ≥30 cm3, the worst 5-year OS rate was experienced by those given surgery. The 5-year PFS rate of patients given combined radiotherapy and surgery was significantly better than that of patients given radiotherapy. The surgical complications of patients given the combined treatment were comparable to those who received surgery, but radiation side effects were significantly lower. CONCLUSION: GTVp is prognostic for OS and PFS in upper ESCC. For patients with GTVp ≥30 cm3, radiotherapy plus surgery was more effective than either treatment alone.

RESUMO

Although the successful clinical trials of immunotherapy show promising strategies for many cancers, its application in glioma has lagged in comparison with the progress seen in other cancers. Both isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutations and 1p/19q codeletions are critical molecular alterations affecting therapeutic response in lower-grade glioma (LGG). The systematic and comprehensive characterization of the immunological phenotypes with different molecular subtypes is key to improving our understanding and application of immunotherapies in LGG. Here, we collected the RNA-sequencing, somatic mutation, and clinical data from 1,052 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas and stratified patients into three genetic subgroups: IDH mutations with 1p/19q codeletions (IDH mut-codel), IDH mutations without 1p/19q codeletions (IDH mut-noncodel), and IDH wild-type. Our evaluations revealed that IDH mutations and 1p/19q codeletions were associated with distinct immunological tumor microenvironments in LGG. In addition, immune cell infiltration, the expression of immune checkpoint and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) gene, and the activity of immune signaling pathways shared gradual increase from IDH mut-codel to IDH wild-type. We further constructed and validated an immune-related prognostic signature that presented high value in predicting the overall survival time in LGG. In conclusion, our study may provide valuable information for immunotherapy strategies in LGG patients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of fibulin-3 on vascular endothelial function, and to explore the relevant underlying mechanism with regard to the involvement of angiotensin II (AngII). METHODS: One hundred and eight patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 31 controls were included to measure the flow-mediated dilatation (FMD). Serum fibulin-3 and AngII were examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and radioimmunoassay. Stable transfection of fibulin-3 was conducted on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and SV40T-transformed HUVECs (PUMC-HUVEC-T1 cells). Cell counting kit-8 assay, cell cycle assay, wound healing assay, Transwell assay, apoptosis assay, and tube formation assay were subsequently performed. The expression of angiogenesis-associated genes [endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA)] were measured by western blot analysis. HUVECs and PUMC-HUVEC-T1 cells were treated with AngII, and with or without an inhibitor of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), BAY 11-7082. Pro-inflammatory cytokines [interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)] were detected by ELISA. The expression levels of fibulin-3 and p65 were then measured by western blotting. RESULTS: Lower levels of serum fibulin-3 were accompanied by poorer FMD and higher levels of serum AngII in patients with EH. Fibulin-3 overexpression promoted cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis, but led to an inhibition of apoptosis. By contrast, fibulin-3 downregulation inhibited cell proliferation, migration and angiogenesis, but promoted apoptosis. AngII induced inflammation and inhibited the expression of fibulin-3. BAY 11-7082 eliminated the inhibitory effect of AngII on fibulin-3. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, the results of the present study have shown that serum fibulin-3 may be a predictor of vascular endothelial function in patients with EH. Fibulin-3 gene may also have a beneficial role in repairing the vascular endothelium. Furthermore, the results also suggested that fibulin-3 gene was suppressed by AngII via the NF-κB signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Glioma groups, including lower-grade glioma (LGG) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), are the most common primary brain tumor. Malignant gliomas, especially glioblastomas, are associated with a dismal prognosis. Hypoxia is a driver of the malignant phenotype in glioma groups; it triggers a cascade of immunosuppressive processes and malignant cellular responses (tumor progression, anti-apoptosis, and resistance to chemoradiotherapy), which result in disease progression and poor prognosis. However, approaches to determine the extent of hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment are still unclear. Here, we downloaded 575 LGG patients and 354 GBM patients from Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (GGGA), and 530 LGG patients and 167 GBM patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) with RNA sequence and clinicopathological data. We developed a hypoxia risk model to reflect the immune microenvironment in glioma and predict prognosis. High hypoxia risk score was associated with poor prognosis and indicated an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Hypoxia signature significantly correlated with clinical and molecular features and could serve as an independent prognostic factor for glioma patients. Moreover, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis showed that gene sets associated with the high-risk group were involved in carcinogenesis and immunosuppression signaling. In conclusion, we developed and validated a hypoxia risk model, which served as an independent prognostic indicator and reflected overall immune response intensity in the glioma microenvironment.

RESUMO

Although radiation therapy (RT) plays a critical role in the treatment of low-grade glioma (LGG), many patients suffer from adverse effects without experiencing survival benefits. In various carcinomas, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) contribute to pathogenic processes, including tumorigenesis, metastasis, chemoresistance, and radioresistance. Currently, the role of lncRNAs in the radiosensitivity of LGG is largely unknown. Here, we downloaded clinical data for 167 LGG patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas database and divided them between radiosensitive and radioresistant groups based on their clinical outcomes after receiving radiotherapy. We identified 37 lncRNAs that were differentially expressed (DElncRNAs) between the groups. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that their potential target mRNAs were mainly enriched in the PI3K-Akt and MAPK signaling pathways and in DNA damage response. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that increased expression of six lncRNAs was significantly associated with radiosensitivity. We then developed a risk signature based on three of the DElncRNAs that served as an independent biomarker for predicting LGG patient outcomes after radiotherapy. In vitro experiments further validated the biological function of these lncRNAs on low-grade glioma radiation response.

RESUMO

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a highly aggressive disease and ∼30% of the patients are diagnosed at the metastatic stage. Even with new targeted therapies, the average progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) rates are dismal. Thus, biomarkers for early detection and progression could improve disease outcome. The role of C1q/tumor necrosis factor (C1QTNF) family in cancer is an emerging field of research. However, the biological function of C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein 6 (C1QTNF6) and its prognostic value in cancer are rarely reported. This study aimed to evaluate C1QTNF6 as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for ccRCC. In this study, we enrolled 993 ccRCC samples (data from our cohort, The Cancer Genome Atlas, and Gene Expression Omnibus) with C1QTNF6 expression to explore its role and mechanism in ccRCC. The diagnostic power of C1QTNF6 was determined by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and its prognostic value was evaluated by Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression models, respectively. In addition, the gene set enrichment analysis was performed to unveil the molecular mechanism of C1QTNF6 in ccRCC. We demonstrated that C1QTNF6 was overexpressed in ccRCC, and elevated C1QTNF6 expression correlated with clinical progression. Besides, C1QTNF6 served as a new diagnostic biomarker for renal cell carcinoma. Moreover, C1QTNF6 is an independent risk factor for OS in ccRCC patients. Furthermore, C1QTNF6-related signaling pathways activated in ccRCC are mainly enriched in cell cycle, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and angiogenesis signaling pathways. Taken together, our results provided insights in understanding the potential role of C1QTNF6 in promoting tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis, and its use as a novel cancer diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for ccRCC.

RESUMO

To explore the role of quantitative digital subtraction angiography (QDSA) in the diagnosis of small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Between November 2015 and November 2017, all patients who underwent chemoembolization for HCC were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with tumors measuring more than 5 cm or evident post-processing imaging artifacts were excluded. Images were post-processed using the QDSA technique. Regions of interest were manually drawn on proper hepatic artery (as a reference), target HCC and peritumoral liver. Time-concentration curves and flow parameters of the peak ratio, subtracted time-to-peak (TTP), and area under the curve (AUC) ratio was obtained and analyzed.A total of 146 HCCs (mean diameter, 1.6 cm) of 71 cirrhotic patients (54 men, 17 women; mean age, 67.7 years) were enrolled. Compared with liver parenchyma, HCCs showed an increased and more rapid flow (peak ratio, AUC ratio, subtracted TTP, and wash-in slope; all P <.001). Compared with untreated HCCs, chemoembolized HCCs showed a slower flow (subtracted TTP and wash-in slope, P = .004 and .002, respectively). HCCs with a typical enhancement pattern on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had a trend toward Type III (washout pattern) time-concentration curves (P <.001). Chemoembolized HCCs had a trend toward Type II (plateau pattern) time-concentration curves (P = .005).QDSA technology can be used to quantify perfusion measurements of HCC and hepatic parenchyma and to assess perfusion changes after HCC chemoembolization.

RESUMO

Increasing contextual interference (CI) during practice benefits learning, making it a desirable difficulty. For example, interleaved practice (IP) of motor sequences is generally more difficult than repetitive practice (RP) during practice but leads to better learning. Here we investigated whether CI in practice modulated resting-state functional connectivity during consolidation. 26 healthy adults (11 men/15 women, age = 23.3 ±â€¯1.3 years) practiced two sets of three sequences in an IP or RP condition over 2 days, followed by a retention test on Day 5 to evaluate learning. On each practice day, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired during practice and also in a resting state immediately after practice. The resting-state fMRI data were processed using independent component analysis (ICA) followed by functional connectivity analysis, showing that IP on Day 1 led to greater resting connectivity than RP between the left premotor cortex and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), bilateral posterior cingulate cortices, and bilateral inferior parietal lobules. Moreover, greater resting connectivity after IP than RP on Day 1, between the left premotor cortex and the hippocampus, amygdala, putamen, and thalamus on the right, and the cerebellum, was associated with better learning following IP. Mediation analysis further showed that the association between enhanced resting premotor-hippocampal connectivity on Day 1 and better retention performance following IP was mediated by greater task-related functional activation during IP on Day 2. Our findings suggest that the benefit of CI to motor learning is likely through enhanced resting premotor connectivity during the early phase of consolidation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the differences in arterial flow after flow diverter placement using quantitative flow measurements based on digital subtraction angiography (DSA). METHODS: Between November 2013 and November 2015, all patients who had flow diverters placed for distal internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms were reviewed. Patients in whom the stent was placed across the ostia of the ophthalmic artery (OphA) and anterior choroidal artery (AChA) were enrolled. Five regions of interest were selected: the proximal ICA (as a reference), terminal ICA, middle cerebral artery (MCA), anterior cerebral artery (ACA), OphA, and AChA. The values of the peak, time-to-peak (TTP), and area under the curve (AUC) were analyzed using a quantitative DSA technique. RESULTS: The study enrolled 13 patients. The quantitative flow analysis showed improved flow in the terminal ICA (peak and AUC, p=0.036 and p=0.04, respectively), MCA (AUC, p=0.023), and ACA (AUC, p=0.006), and decreased flow in the OphA (peak and AUC, p=0.013 and p=0.005, respectively) and AChA (peak and subtracted TTP, p=0.023 and p=0.050, respectively) after flow diverter placement. Larger aneurysm volume was significantly correlated with decreased OphA flow after the procedure (peak and AUC, p=0.049 and p=0.037, respectively). Larger aneurysm volume also had a marginal correlation with increased distal ICA flow after the procedure, but this did not reach significance (peak and AUC, p=0.195 and p=0.060, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Without using extra contrast medium or radiation dosages, color-coded DSA enables quantitative monitoring of the cerebral circulation after flow-diverting treatment.

RESUMO

Practicing tasks arranged in an interleaved manner generally leads to superior retention compared with practicing tasks repetitively, a phenomenon known as the contextual interference (CI) effect. We investigated the brain network of motor learning under CI, that is, the CI network, and how it was affected by aging. Sixteen younger and 16 older adults practiced motor sequences arranged in a repetitive or an interleaved order over 2 days, followed by a retention test on day 5 to evaluate learning. Network analysis was applied to functional MRI data on retention to define the CI network by identifying brain regions with greater between-region connectivity after interleaved compared with repetitive practice. CI effects were present in both groups but stronger in younger adults. Moreover, CI networks in younger adults exhibited efficient small-world topology, with a significant association between higher network centrality and better learning after interleaved practice. Older adults did not show such favorable network properties. Our findings suggest that aging affects the efficiency of brain networks underlying enhanced motor learning after CI practice.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the rules of the changes of schistosomiasis infection and Oncomelania snails in areas where schistosomiasis transmission was controlled or interrupted or rebounded after interruption. METHODS: Qingbaijiang District, Longquanyi District and Xide County were selected and investigated retrospectively to collect schistosomiasis epidemiological information 10 years before they reached the criterion of transmission control and the subsequent years until 2008. The database of retrospective investigation was established for analyzing the trends and rules of changes of snail status and human infection status. RESULTS: In Qingbaijiang District, there was a positive correlation between density of living snails and snail area (r = 0.74, P < 0.01), and the infection rate of population was declining. In Longquanyi District, the snail area presented a declining trend. In Xide County, the human infection rate was positively correlated with snail area (R = 0.53, P < 0.01) and the density of living snails (r = 0.42, P < 0.05) respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The rebound of snail situation is always prior to the emerging of human infection, and it prompts that the rebound of snail situation can be considered one of the important indicators of early warning of the rebound of human infection situation in those places where schistosomiasis transmission was controlled or interrupted. Implementing comprehensive control of the snail habitat, as well as eliminating the potential infectious source is an important measure to consolidate the achievement of schistosomiasis control.
